In the vibrant heart of Mississippi, a unique movement is redefining how local musical talent is discovered and nurtured. Cordless Corner, a vocal artist showcase, has become a beacon for aspiring musicians, offering not just a stage, but a pathway to growth and a connection to a larger mission. I had the opportunity to catch up with its visionary organizer, Bo Trebotich, to explore the driving force behind this remarkable initiative.
A Resurgence of Rhythm: The Genesis of Cordless Corner
Bo Trebotich, a seasoned local musician with over two decades of experience, observed a significant shift in Mississippi's music scene after a period away. "This city used to thrive in music," he reflects, noting the decline of dedicated music venues and the increasing rarity of seeing truly exceptional artists outside of restaurant settings. This observation ignited a spark: a desire to reignite the local scene and provide emerging artists with the same vibrant opportunities he cherished from his youth. From this passion, Cordless Corner was born.
Its powerful tagline, "Where hometown voices get discovered!" is more than just words. Bo emphasizes that the success of Cordless Corner is a collective effort. "We strictly rely on word of mouth. Each partner we have plays a role in helping facilitate new artists signing up each season. This is not a one-man show; it takes a village."
Beyond the Mic: S.H.I.N.E. and a Deeper Mission
What truly distinguishes Cordless Corner is its profound connection to S.H.I.N.E. (See His Influence N Everything), Bo's non-profit organization dedicated to combating human trafficking. "As the owner of a nonprofit, we are always looking for ways to fund our mission," Bo explains. Drawing on his musical background, he found a powerful synergy. "The thought process behind it was to not only help new and upcoming artists have a voice in music, but to teach them to use their platform and voice as a tool to stand up and fight against evil. Every artist we take on, one of their main reasons for joining is because they care about ending Human Trafficking."
This integrated approach transforms Cordless Corner from a mere competition into a platform for social good, empowering artists to use their talent for a cause greater than themselves.
Cultivating Careers: Prizes and Partnerships
Cordless Corner offers tangible, career-advancing prizes to its winners, including a studio package from Eternal Beyond Studio, a music video from Deep Roots Production, a photography package from Pen + Lens Media, and so much more. These aren't just accolades; they are vital tools for emerging artists.
Bo attributes these invaluable partnerships to long-standing relationships and a shared commitment to nurturing talent. "When you look at young artists and
hear how they have songs but no money to record, you want to help them out," he states. Collaborations with partners like Eternal Beyond, Deep Roots, Pen + Lens, and SNS Creations provide artists with professional resources, often at no cost or a discounted rate. "Again, it takes a village to do this, it's not a one-man show."
The impact on participants is evident. Bo recalls a conversation with Season 3 winner, Lauren Lindsay, who shared, "CC has had a huge impact on my career, it has gotten me into places I never thought I'd be playing. It gave me a new fan base, and I hope in the future I can come back and help mentor artists who are signed up so I can give back to CC." Similarly, Season 1 winner Hayden Stephens remains connected, often seeking Bo's guidance. "Once you are a part of CC, you become family for life and we will always do what we can to help in the future."
The Cordless Corner Experience: A Night of Discovery
Cordless Corner has found its ideal home at Shaggy’s on the Rez. "This is the place where artists want to play," Bo affirms. The unique setting, with its patio overlooking the water, provides a surprisingly calming atmosphere amidst the excitement. "When you are up there and you have 6 judges staring at you, your friends cheering you on, anxiety kicks in but you can always look at how calm the water is and relax."
A typical Wednesday night is a meticulously orchestrated event. Starting at 4 PM, the venue buzzes with activity as Sirius Southern Entertainment sets up and Shaggy's staff prepare for the anticipated crowd. Artists, meanwhile, engage in a supportive group chat, sharing last-minute details and words of encouragement. By 6 PM, tables are full, and by 7 PM, the stage lights up. Bo notes the audience's dedication: "You can see the audience stay after just to find out where they can hear that artist again," a testament to the captivating talent on display.
The diverse judging panel, carefully selected by the committee, shares a collective passion for fostering new artists. They evaluate performances based on criteria such as stage presence, crowd participation, wardrobe, and the willingness to take creative risks. Weekly themes are designed not just for variety, but to challenge artists, pushing them beyond their comfort zones and expanding their musical repertoires.
Inclusivity is a cornerstone of Cordless Corner. "Even though we are a Christian Nonprofit, we leave all politics and religion out of our posts and themes," Bo explains. "We want everyone to feel welcomed... we don't discriminate... it is not for us to judge you on anything but your musical talent." He shares a poignant example from Season 4, Week 1, where an "American" theme inspired many artists to perform worship or revival songs. "We went to church without anyone having to say anything and that is how I know CC is doing its job. We don't have to preach for people to come to church."
Bo's Journey: From Challenge to Empowerment
Bo's personal narrative is deeply woven into the fabric of Cordless Corner. His journey from a challenging past in South Jackson to becoming a "motivator" is a powerful testament to resilience. "I wanted to give that back to the youth of my city because a lot of them lost hope in ever becoming something great," he shares, recalling his mentoring programs that steered young adults away from gang life. His ongoing work against human trafficking further fuels his dedication to empowering others.
He views musicians through a similar lens. "This time though, it's not me that's saving them, it's them saving them. They just need someone to believe in them enough for them to say yes, I'll do it." Cordless Corner provides that crucial support system, fostering a family-like atmosphere where artists feel supported in a journey that can often be solitary.
The Road Ahead: Growth and Community Impact
Bo harbors ambitious long-term goals for Cordless Corner. "Real talk, our long-term goals for CC are to be as long-running as the larger singing competitions like The Voice or American Idol." With a dedicated committee, discussions are already underway for spin-offs and expanding to more seasons annually. The primary challenge? "Not having enough room," a positive indicator of the showcase's growing popularity, which they are actively addressing with potential expansion plans at Shaggy's.
For aspiring artists considering applying, Bo offers clear advice: "Don't let the word 'competition' stop you from trying." He encourages connecting with past participants and understanding that competition is a natural part of life. "Don't let anxiety make you think this competition is any different."
The broader community can play a vital role in supporting Cordless Corner's mission through partnerships and sponsorships, which help enhance prizes and further S.H.I.N.E.'s fight against human trafficking. This year, Cordless Corner is also extending its impact by hosting PINKtober Fest on October 11th at Back Porch on HWY 471 in Brandon, MS. This special event will feature Cordless Corner artists donating their time to raise awareness for breast cancer, with all proceeds benefiting long-time judge Branden Walker in his fight against breast cancer.
Cordless Corner is more than a music showcase; it's a dynamic force for good in Mississippi, a place where talent is celebrated, dreams are nurtured, and the power of music is harnessed for meaningful change.
